Background

Statistics‌ ‌are‌ ‌important‌ ‌in‌ ‌order‌ ‌to‌ ‌guide‌ ‌the‌ ‌choices‌ ‌we‌ ‌make‌ ‌as‌ ‌a‌ ‌people.‌ ‌Institutions‌ ‌even‌ ‌thrive‌ ‌on‌ ‌this‌ ‌and‌ ‌have‌ ‌databases‌ ‌full‌ ‌of‌ ‌data.‌ ‌However,‌ ‌this‌ ‌is‌ ‌offered‌ ‌in‌ ‌a‌ ‌decentralized‌ ‌digital‌ ‌manner,‌ ‌which‌ ‌makes‌ ‌it‌ ‌an‌ ‌invisible‌ ‌tiring‌ ‌quest‌ ‌for‌ ‌the‌ ‌seeker.‌ ‌Wouldn’t‌ ‌it‌ ‌be‌ ‌much‌ ‌easier‌ ‌if‌ ‌this‌ ‌data‌ ‌(including‌ ‌internal‌ ‌statistics)‌ ‌were‌ ‌provided‌ ‌digitally‌ ‌centrally?‌ ‌

What is currently available?

After a little bit of research, we can read that the Central Bureau of Statistics (CBS) presents the actual figures and the Social Cultural Planning Office (SCP) gives context to those figures. They answer the question ‘What am I supposed to understand about these figures?’ Think of it as a German-Dutch relationship. The stiff no opinion-forming CBS resembles a German and the indicative opinion-forming SCP typically resembles a cheerful Dutch person.

Very nice that this is there, but this does not provide an overview.

Why does this not provide an overview?

CBS: This makes data available per researched subject. Clear boxes, but it is constantly switching back and forth to see connections between the numbers.

SCP: Although they interpret the figures, there is no relationship between the outlined figures

What does provide an overview?

First, the distribution. Linking all (internal) statistics that are now stored locally to the CBS system. The search for all statistics is thus limited to Statistics Netherlands.

Second, the rendering. A graphical dashboard that makes it possible to link framed data with each other and to superimpose it as layers (whether or not automated) to see connections between figures. This counteracts data polarization.

Third, the link. What Statistics Netherlands does for the Netherlands are comparable databases in other countries. But that is not enough, we even want to be able to make intercontinental connections.

The credo is: Search less, find more

Who will benefit?

Researcher (s) & Journalism; These target groups depend on (the distribution of) statistics on which they are calculated if they are used incorrectly. This makes searching for statistics crucial and we do these target groups more than a great favor when all statistics can be retrieved from one central database wherever and from anyone.

Entrepreneurs; This target group creates jobs. And jobs can only be created if the statistics show that there is a need or a market. In order to counter the large quantities of (premature) bankruptcy, statistics help to form solid market research. In addition, they also need to keep an eye on trends to keep their competitive position stable, and multi-layer graphical representations of the statistics help them with that.

Governments & Foundations; These target groups can spend thanks to tax money but should be accountable for results. Linking intercontinental relationships provides insight into whether tax money spent actually works. And if so, how well. With this, decisions are made and that contributes to the support on which tax money will be spent in the name of a result statement.

In short, this solution aims to create clarity, unanimity and help all sorts of feathers to move forward.

Conclusion

With this solution, we aim to create clarity, unanimity and help all sorts of feathers to move forward. We only find out one way whether this will work.
